What that means for an 80,000-word book

Multiply the word count by the per-word rate. Proofreading comes to about $1,120 to $1,680. Copy editing comes to about $1,600 to $2,560. Developmental editing comes to about $2,080 to $4,240.

What changes the price

  • Word count. Longer books cost more. Authors often underestimate their length.
  • Genre. Non-fiction and heavily detailed fantasy or sci-fi usually cost more than romance or thriller.
  • Manuscript condition. A cleaner draft needs fewer corrections.
  • Editor experience and niche expertise.
  • Turnaround. Rush deadlines can add a fee.
  • Children's books. Picture books are often a flat fee rather than per word.

Which edit does your book need?

Most self-published books need a copy edit and a proofread. A developmental edit is worth it if you are unsure the story or argument works. Skipping straight to proofreading on an unedited draft is the most common waste of money. Author Support tells you which level you need before you pay.

How to compare two editing quotes

  1. Check they edit the same level.
  2. Check the word count each quote is based on.
  3. Ask how many rounds of review are included.
  4. Ask who the editor is and their experience.
